This week’s case highlights a patient presenting with ocular foreign body. Given the difficulty obtaining a comprehensive eye exam in this patient secondary to agitation there was discussion about providing versed for anxiolysis. However ultimately consensus among the group was that we would work in collaboration with Ophthalmology to provide sedation that would aide in their success of removal in a safe environment with minimal risk to the patient.
Patient went to the OR the next morning. In the OR, foreign body is successfully removed. When the object is removed there is immediate rush of aqueous fluid, diagnostic of full thickness penetrating corneal injury and open globe injury. Patient is admitted for IV antibiotics postoperatively. At follow up visits 5 months later patient has 20/20 vision in both eyes but continues to wear eye patch 3 hours per day at preschool.
