Hot Seat #247 Denouement
Posted on: August 28, 2025, by : Brittany FitzpatrickThis week’s case highlights a patient presenting with button battery in the stomach. Given the risk of button battery corrosion when ingested, we discussed the NASPGHAN guidelines on proper management of these cases depending on the location of the battery, battery size, symptoms and age of the child. We also discussed how recommendations may change depending on the patient ability to report symptoms. Ultimately, we came to the consensus that it was safe for this patient to be discharged from the ED and for parents to continue monitoring the patient’s stools at home.
Patient returned to the ED in 72 hours. No abdominal pain or vomiting in the interim . Endorses one bloody stool shortly after leaving ED 3 days ago. No change in dietary habits, does not appear to be in pain or distress. No concern for new ingestions.
